Our commitment to equity
Melville-Knox Highland is committed to treating every person with equity, equality, dignity, fairness and respect.
As a Christian organisation, we believe that every human being is made in the image of God and possesses inherent dignity and worth. There is therefore a strong moral basis for treating others as we would wish to be treated. We will seek in all circumstances to act on Christ’s command: “love thy neighbour as thyself.” Matthew 22:39. There are other aspects in which we are described as equal in terms of our need and God’s offer of eternal life (Romans 3:23; Revelation 22:17).
Our Christian principles of love, justice, compassion and impartiality underpin our commitment to equity and equality.
An open and welcoming community
Melville-Knox Highland welcomes people of all backgrounds to its community and educational activities (see Romans 15:7).
We have accessible facilities including wheelchair access and an accessible toilet. We seek to ensure that no person is unfairly excluded or discriminated against as a user of our facilities.
Our community building is intended to be open to all, in accordance with our charitable purposes (see Hebrews 13:2). We seek to make our activities, communications and services inclusive and accessible (see James 2:3). Information will be provided in clear language and, where reasonably requested, in an appropriate alternative format.
We recognise that people have different circumstances and needs and will make reasonable adjustments where appropriate.
Christian identity and religious roles
Melville-Knox Highland is an explicitly Christian organisation, with a particular focus on the Reformed faith. Our Christian beliefs and ethos are integral to our charitable purposes and our desire to serve the community (see 1 Peter 4:10).
Where a particular religious belief or commitment is a genuine and lawful occupational requirement for a role, we require applicants for such roles to meet that requirement. Such requirements will be applied in line with the Equality Act 2010 and other applicable law.
This does not diminish our commitment to treating applicants, employees, volunteers, participants and members of the wider community fairly and with respect (see 1 Peter 3:15).
Fairness and participation
We will engage with and listen to our local community (see James 1:19) in the development and management of the organisation.
Our Board will encourage contributions from people with a wide range of backgrounds and experiences (see 1 Corinthians 12:4, 7). When making significant decisions, we will consider their potential impact on different groups and, where appropriate, seek the views of those who may be affected (see Proverbs 15:22).
We will seek to conduct procurement and work with suppliers, contractors and partners fairly and transparently, taking account of equality, accessibility and inclusion where relevant.
Challenging discrimination
Discriminatory, harassing, threatening or belittling behaviour is not acceptable within our activities or facilities (see Ephesians 4:31–32).
Where we identify significant barriers to participation, we will consider appropriate practical steps to address them (see Leviticus 19:14).
We will take concerns about discrimination seriously, investigate them fairly and take appropriate action. We will maintain appropriate records of any complaints received and the action taken in response (see Leviticus 19:15).
Circular economy and responsible use of resources
Melville-Knox Highland seeks to use resources wisely, reduce waste and encourage the reuse, repair and responsible management of materials and equipment. We will consider opportunities to reduce consumption, extend the useful life of resources and make effective use of renewable energy, recognising our responsibility to care for God’s creation (see Genesis 2:15).
Health and safety
Melville-Knox Highland is committed to providing safe premises and activities for everyone who uses our facilities. We will identify and manage risks appropriately, maintain our facilities and equipment responsibly, and seek to learn from accidents, incidents and concerns. Our Health and Safety Policy and associated risk assessments provide further detail.
Child Protection
Melville-Knox Highland is committed to protecting children and young people from harm and to providing a safe environment in all our activities. We will take concerns seriously, respond appropriately and follow relevant child protection procedures and Scottish guidance. Our detailed Child Protection Policy sets out our responsibilities and procedures.
Good governance
Melville-Knox Highland seeks to manage its charitable resources responsibly, transparently and in accordance with its governing documents and applicable law. Our trustees are accountable for the proper stewardship of the organisation and will seek to act with integrity, avoid conflicts of interest and make decisions in the best interests of the charity
Feedback and improvement
We welcome feedback about equality, accessibility and inclusion. Our governance lead is Hugo van Woerden
Feedback will be considered by the appropriate person or governing body and used, where appropriate, to improve our activities and services. We will review this Charter annually and share relevant good practice where appropriate.
